drone crash

Let us read. Let us return. Let Us Drone.

There is always a degree of fallibility with any manufactured product. That degree is naturally higher with electronics as there is so much that goes into making them operate smoothly. So what does that mean for technology companies? It means that they use long, wordy sentences with often ambiguous seeming terminology when talking about their product warranties. They do this because there’s about a million and one things that can go wrong with electronics, and they sure don’t want to pay for not even a fraction of those.

There are three different scenarios that you need to be familiar with. 1) You may be eligible for a full refund within 7 calendar days of receiving the product if you qualify. 2) DJI may provide you with a replacement within 15 calendar days of receiving the product if you qualify. 3) DJI may repair your product if the damaged part(s) are still in the warranty period.

I’ve done my best to provide a simple guide for you to see if your DJI drone or gimbal is under warranty, and how to go about getting that refund/repair process started. Check below to see what category your product currently falls under.

Am I eligible for a full refund?

First off, was your product purchased from an authorized DJI dealer/retailer? If not, you can stop reading here because DJI won’t touch one that wasn’t. Next, we have to pull that valid proof-of-purchase, receipt, or order number out, because they won’t refund you for, replace, or repair a drone that you found while hiking through the woods. Okay, we’re making good progress, now we need to figure out how long you’ve had the product for.

So maybe you decided this whole drone thing isn’t for you. That’s okay, my feelings are only marginally hurt. DJI will provide you with a full refund if it has been 7 calendar days or less since you received the product, unless that product has been activated. That product needs to be in new or like-new condition. DJI will also provide you with a full refund within that 7 days if the product you received had a manufacturing defect. Click here for a list of reasons DJI will deny you a full refund; that list is under the “general terms” section and is the third paragraph down.

Will DJI replace my product?

If it is within 15 calendar days since the product was received (not the purchase date), that product may be replaced by DJI if it was damaged in transit, suffers performance failure, or the product doesn’t match the advertised description. DJI proceeds to provide a list for reasons why they would not provide the buyer with a replacement. That list is lengthy, and can be found here, under “general terms”, the fifth paragraph down.

Something I found to be quite important is that the replacement product or parts may not be new. I think it’s important enough to quote DJI directly.

“Replacement products or parts provided by DJI may not be new, but it will be in good working order and at least functionally equivalent to the original product or part’s warranty. A replacement product or part shall be covered for the time remaining in the original product’s warranty.” -DJI

Warranty periods for DJI’s products

So you've been having a blast with your new Inspire 2, but you start to notice that one of the batteries seems to be losing a charge quite a bit quicker than it should. You've owned the drone for five months and after checking in the DJI Go app, you see that the battery has been charged 173 times. Is that battery still under warranty? Refer to the tables below.

“Under this Limited Warranty, DJI warrants that each DJI product that you purchase will be free from material and workmanship defects under normal use in accordance with DJI’s published product materials during the warranty period. DJI’s published product materials include, but not limited to, user manuals, safety guidelines, specifications, in-app notifications, and service communications.” -DJI

Here are step by step instructions to walk you through the return process

There are a few steps DJI would like you to take before throwing your drone in a box and shipping it back to them. First, pull out that proof-of-purchase, receipt, or order number we talked about earlier. Next, they would like you to visit their product support page here, where they’ll want to know more about why’d like to initiate a return. Depending on why you’re returning the product, they may have you fill out a “Repair Application Form”, which can be found here, and DJI will tell you where to ship the product.

Go ahead and delete any personal data you have stored on the device, but DJI would like you to leave the flight logs for their reference. As you see in the image below, they have provided us with a handy flow-chart that gives you an overall picture of what the process looks like.

It’s very important that you have a clear understanding of what your current circumstance is before you send your product to DJI. As displayed in the image above, if DJI determines that you do not fall under the warranty terms, they will make you pay for shipping both ways. If you decline to pay for the repair yourself (assuming you’re out of warranty), you’ll have to pay for the test that DJI conducted on your product before they will ship it back to you. Ouch.
