What is the LUD Score?
The LUD Score (or Let Us Drone Score) is a number given to each drone – the higher the number, the better the drone.
Points are awarded for how the drone performs in five key categories, comprised of over forty-two different metrics – making this the most comprehensive drone comparison tool ever seen!
How are the scores calculated?
We spent a great deal of time answering the question “what makes a drone great?”. Is it the long flight time…the nice camera? It's both, and a lot more!
Based on the features that drones have (or strive to have), we broke our scoring system up into the following five categories:
Camera
Performance
Intelligence
RC / Features / Size
Drone Battery
The total points from all five categories will give you the LUD Score for a drone.
What is the highest LUD Score?
At any given time, there will be a maximum LUD Score. This number is obtained by adding together the highest allowable points for each category. This would theoretically represent the “perfect drone”.
This number will change over time as new drones come out with improved features.
Why is the LUD Score necessary?
When I was looking for my first “professional” drone a few years back, I did quite a bit of research. I had ten different tabs open on my browser, which I would toggle through when comparing the cameras…or the flight modes…or the range.
I really wanted a single source where I could see how all of the drones stacked up, but none seemed to exist.
Now that I work in the drone industry and have spent thousands of hours learning about what makes a drone “great”, I feel qualified and confident enough to present you with this ultimate drone comparison tool!
The Categories
I wanted to make the LUD Score comparison tool as objective as possible. That said, there were times when it was necessary for me to use my judgment when determining the scoring weights of categories/metrics.
For example, a camera with a 1″ sensor gets 10 points, whereas a 1/2″ sensor only gets 5 points. Although the 48 MP quad bayer camera on the Mavic Air 2 may have better dynamic range than a regular 12 MP camera, it's effectively still a 12 MP camera, thus only getting 3 points.
In this instance, It was necessary to grant more points for sensor size than for MP count, as it's the larger sensor that ultimately represents a superior camera.

- Active Track / Follow Me
With "Active Track", the done's camera(s) is used to track a subject. The subject is kept in the frame. With "Follow Me", the drone typically follows the RC at a preset distance by way of GPS.
Active Track is often used for photography/videography, whereas Follow Me is often used solely for keeping the drone close by.
